Michael Holtzman, chairman of SCORE, is a retired executive. Initially “growing up” within a large U.S. Corporation, Container Corporation of America. He left the organization as West Coast divisional Marketing Manager, to become president of a Graphic Arts division of McGraw Hill. In 1968 he founded and became Director of an offshore private investment company and spent the next 10 years living and traveling throughout Latin America and Europe.

He established his U.S. Offices in 78, living in Coral Gabled Florida until his retirement and move to St. Anne Illinois in 1994. During these periods he became a trustee to The College of Rome, a member of the Executive Committee of Fondation Educative Pro Deo, and in the U.S. a certified member of the American Arbitration Association.

Locally, in addition to his work with SCORE, Holtzman has served as President of the Kankakee Valley Symphony Orchestra Board and Chairman of the Kankakee Valley steering committee for a drug free county.

SCORE is a national organization, sponsored by the Small Business Administration. It is comprised of volunteers who use their experience and expertise to encourage and cultivate local economic growth by counseling new entrepreneurial efforts and/or expanding established businesses. The Chapter is assigned to cover the counties of Kankakee, Iroquois, Grundy and LaSalle.

How do I apply for the free grant money I hear about on TV and read in advertising?


A: There NO free grant money. Reading between the lines you’ll find that there is in fact money within the designated departments, but it is for administrative expenses, NOT for distribution.

What is the most common mistake in preparing a business plan?


A: Not providing for personal income within the business plan. Without this provision you’re running a hobby, not a business.

What other professional help should I seek if going into business and maintain, if already in business?


A: SCORE gives an annual seminar entitled the “Four Imperatives.” The four imperatives necessary to maintain a successful on going business are;
An Attorney, A CPA, A Banker and an Insurance Agent.

Where can I go to find all the necessary documents and forms necessary to starting a business?


A: In the SBDC office, located in the Kankakee Community College, is ALL the information and forms you will need.

What if my project doesn’t fall within the experience of any of the SCORE counselors>


A: SCORE has access to the national Data base of 11,000 Score members. We will find the counselor qualified in your area and you can maintain a line of communication with him/her through email.

What if my idea is patentable and I feel it is premature to discuss it?


A: When you sign up with a SCORE counselor, that counselor is prevented, BY LAW, to discuss your project with anyone without your express permission.
